Pomegranate Season!

I’m so excited! I finally found the first pomegranates of the season here in Indiana. I love pomegranates and all their beautiful tasty seeds! I mean look at these little jewels!! I was a little nervous when I offered some to my almost two year old. He loved them last year but as we all know with small children, they often forget they liked something and then refuse to eat it later on. This can be especially true with seasonal produce that’s hard to find out of season. However I am thrilled to say that he still loves them! 

Why am I thrilled you may wonder, it’s just a fruit which contains natural sugar (which our society keeps telling us should be eaten only in moderation) what’s the big deal? Pomegranates are basically a superfood, and unlike some crazy good for you foods like kale 😝, pomegranate seeds actually taste good!! Here is a fun graphic that gives a synopsis of some of the benefits and history of pomegranates. Good stuff right!! Did you see that they minimize dental plaque and contain high amounts of fiber?! What a great thing for our kiddos!! Here are some more benefits just incase that list wasn’t enough for you.Ok some of those are just crazy like helps with dry skin, prevents diarrhea, and increases bone strength! This should not only be in your diet but seriously in your kids’ diets. 

Some Things to Keep in Mind:

Pomegranates are a pricier fruit ranging from $1-$2 per fruit, however the larger the fruit the more seeds that are inside and you definitely get your money’s worth let me tell yah! 

Pomegranates keep really well. So if you can find them for a deal buy 4-5 at a time and take them home and individually wrap them in plastic wrap and keep them in your fridge for up to 3 weeks. You can also go crazy and clean out all the seeds and freeze the seeds for longer. 

Don’t get overwhelmed by the cleaning process. This is a great video on how to remove the seeds. The more times you do it the quicker you will find you’re a pro at it! Your kids will probably get a kick out of helping you hit it with the spoon 😆 Deseeding a Pomegranate Video

Lastly here is a quick list of ways you can utilize your pomegranate seeds if eating them plain just isn’t up your alley. Personally me and my son just sit with a bowl full and a spoon and go to town 😜

  • Ice cream topping
  • Oatmeal mix in
  • Cereal topping
  • Granola mix in
  • Smoothies
  • Sprinkle on pancakes
  • Add to muffins
  • Add to homemade granola bars
  • Rice Krispy Treat add in 
  • Freeze and then add to a fun beverage or punch bowl
  • Top a salad
  • Add to fruit salad
  • Add to Ambrosia for crunch
  • Pulse in a food processor and use as a relish
  • Top warmed Brie with seeds
  • Toss with almonds, lemon juice, EVO, and your favorite green veggie for a crazy healthy side dish!
